Ubigi eSIM Review 2025: Speed Tests & Competitors Compared

Traveling internationally without reliable internet access can feel like being stranded on a desert island.

On a recent trip to Thailand, I decided to test Ubigi and see how reliable this established and fast-growing eSIM provider is.

The short answer…I was impressed!

Ubigi offers solid connectivity at budget-friendly prices, with easy setup that takes less than 3 minutes to get you online.

The app makes it simple to track usage and add data when needed. The whole experience with Ubigi has been very seamless.

But here are the big questions…

• How does Ubigi really stack up in terms of performance?
• Is it as reliable as other major eSIM providers?

As a digital nomad for over 7 years, I know the importance of a solid, reliable, fast data connection.

So, in this Ubigi eSIM review I am going to put them under microscope and share everything you need to know before buying.

Setup Guide: Activate Ubigi eSIM & Get Online In Under 3 Minutes

This is the first big win for Ubigi.

They’ve really thought through the buying process and customer journey. You can easily buy an eSIM Plan in less than a minute.

After purchasing my eSIM plan online, I immediately received an email with simple activation instructions.

You simply scan the QR code sent to your email using your phone’s camera. The phone recognises the eSIM and installs it on your phone.

That’s it!

When you land at your destination, turn your phone on, and it will take about 30 seconds to connect.

Easy right?

But here’s what I really love about Ubigi…

You install the eSIM once, and you use the same eSIM forever.

That means if you get to a new destination, you simply just buy the plan for that destination and it will connect automatically when you arrive.

No need to go through the entire setup and installation process again, you only need to make sure you have your Ubigi eSIM profile turned on and linked to your mobile data selection in your phone settings.

This is a huge benefit for digital nomads like us who don’t want the hassle of buying a local physical SIM card or installing a new eSIM every time we land in a new destination.

It’s also great for travelers visiting multiple countries on their trip!

The truth is that the Ubigi setup and installation process is smooth and quick. It’s a lot better than many of the other eSIM apps and providers I’ve used.

Speed Test Results: Can Ubigi Handle 4K Streaming?

Let’s get to the heart of what most people want to know from this Ubigi eSIM review…

Speed test results.

I am pleased to report that Ubigi holds up very well. They even offer 5G data now in over 60+ destinations worldwide!

I tested Ubigi on a trip to Thailand. We were based primarily in Chiang Mai, but took trips to places like Koh Phangan, Bangkok and Chiang Rai.

In total, I did 15 individual speed tests in different areas of the country.

In my tests, Ubigi delivered an average download speed of 148.8 Mbps, with a median speed of 103 Mbps.

We also visited Singapore and used an Ubigi eSIM while there. These are the speed test results:

These numbers show that Ubigi can more than handle 4K streaming without any buffering issues (you typically need 25+ Mbps).

I was able to stream 4K content on my computer while using my eSIM as a hotspot. The connection quality was stable and consistent, with surprisingly good latency.

I did notice that at peak times, the connection could drop a little bit, and there were dead spots in some areas of Bangkok. But these were relatively minor issues.

But this is less likely to be an issue with Ubigi, and more to do with the infrastructure (which in Thailand is generally very good).

Singapore had strong speeds everywhere we ran tests. Litterally no complaints at all!

What impressed me most is that even in more remote areas, I still had data.

We took a weekend trip from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai with some friends and signal pretty much the entire. I honestly expected the connection to drop out more, but it solid!

For everyday use like social media, email, and navigation, Ubigi performed reliably with almost no issues.

Video calls worked well in areas with good coverage, though small, occasional amounts of stuttering occurred during network transitions, which is to be expected.

Overall, I was very impressed with the speed and performance that Ubigi offered in Thailand and Singapore.

It was even better than a lot of their competitors! More on that later.

Inside The Ubigi App: Top-Ups, Auto-Recharge & Usage Tracking

First of all, it’s important to point out that Ubigi has an app.

And it’s actually really good!

I’ve used a lot of different eSIMs over the last few years. Providers that offer a quality app will make your life so much easier. It’s become essential to using eSIM’s while traveling!

With that in mind let’s tall about Ubigi’s eSIM app.

The app consists of three main screens:

• Dashboard – Track the data usage of your current plans.
• Top Up – List of eSIM plans you can buy from within the app.
• Orders – Mange all of your past orders from the app.

The app isn’t the most amazing in terms of design. But where is shines is functionality.

It’s simple, easy to use and offers a good user experience in general.

When you need more data, the top-up process is simple. Just a few taps and you’re done.

You can even top-up your plan when you’re not connected to wifi or have any remaining data! I haven’t seen that feature with any other eSIM provider and ensure’s you’ll never get stuck.

The app stores your payment cards securely and supports Apple Pay for quick transactions on iOS devices. On Android devices, Google Pay integration works similarly well.

This is the most important feature an eSIM app can offer. In seconds, you can top up your current plan or buy a completely new eSIM package.

Where it does fall down a bit is contacting customer support. There is no direct contact chat feature inside the app itself.

When you click “contact”, you’ll be redirected to the Ubigi website, which is far from ideal. Some other providers offer support from inside their application, which I would have loved to see with Ubigi as well.

Security of the app seems solid with Face ID available for fast, secure access. The app is transparent about data usage, with clear information about what information they collect and how they comply with GDPR regulations.

Overall, I was happy with Ubigi’s app. While there are a couple of more features that would really enhance the experience, it’s functional, reliable and works well.

They’ve recently brought a couple of major design updates, so I am confident they will only continue to improve.

Ubigi Pricing Explained: Pay As You Go and Monthly Subscriptions

Pricing is an essential part of choosing an eSIM.

Why?

Most people use eSIMs when traveling to avoid paying excessive roaming fees.

Ubigi offers flexible pricing options that won’t break the bank. I’ve found their pricing structure to be straightforward, no hidden fees and more affordable in some regions compared to other major eSIM providers.

I like what Ubigi offers in terms of regions. They’re offer great value for money and are perfect for those going on extended trips, through multiple countries.

What’s clear to me is that Ubigi absolutely dominates Europe. There pricing is extremely affordable and they offer a huge range durations and plan types.

But in general, when comparing to traditional roaming charges, Ubigi is significantly cheaper. And I’ve found their pricing to be very competitive (often a lot cheaper) than other major eSIM providers.

The variety of eSIM plans that Ubigi offers is extensive and will suite almost any traveler and budget. It’s honestly a big plus!

Customer Support Review: Can Ubigi Help When You’re Stuck Abroad?

Ubigi offers two different ways to get in contact:

• Live Chat (through their site)
• Email (created through ticket)

To see how Ubigi’s support was I decided to contact them on both channels.

The truth is I wasn’t super impressed.

First, I contacted them through their Live Chat function on their website (there isn’t any option through the app). It was hard to find the live chat bubble on their site, especially on a mobile device.

I was greeted by their AI chatbot Ubi (cool name).

It seems relatively well-trained, and does a good job of giving valuable information.

But what if you need a live agent?

That’s where it takes a turn…

You’ll essentially go through Ubi, make a selection, provide your contact details and they will basically create a ticket for you.

Then, you will either get a response on the chat or through email. The Ubigi live support is Monday to Sunday, 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM CET.

I contacted them twice – Once in the support hours and once out of the support hours.

Within live chat support hours, the customer support team replied in 11 minutes.

Pretty good, right?

But it took about 1 hour and 15 minutes to get a reply outside of the live chat supoort hours ! That’s far from ideal and certainly not fast enough in an emergency.

The service was friendly and the support agent answered my technical question very well.

The truth is that the whole process honestly feels clunky. I imagine if you’re under pressure at an airport in a foreign country, it feels even worse.

The customer support is definitely not one of the strong points for Ubigi. Not only is it difficult to contact them, but responses can take a long time if you’re outside of their live chat hours.

If you catch them during their customer service opening hours, it’s very much on par with other eSIM providers.

Overall, Ubigi has okay customer support. But it’s a weaker point for the company as a whole.

Ubigi Alternatives: How Does Ubigi Stack Up?

It seems like every other day, there is a new eSIM company popping up.

So, how does Ubigi stack up against the competition?

Let’s have a deeper look into the differences between Ubigi and their top competitors.

Holafly vs Ubigi

Holafly and Ubigi take different approaches to data packages.

Holafly focuses primarily on unlimited data plans, which is great for heavy users who don’t want to worry about running out.

Ubigi, on the other hand, offers mostly fixed data packages on one-off plans that are much more affordable. It’s worth mentioning that Ubigi does also have some Unlimited plans as well.

Holafly can be more expensive, but the unlimited data is a major plus if you stream videos or are a heavy-user in general. Just watch the data throttling on their fair usage policy.

Airalo vs Ubigi

Airalo is Ubigi’s “head to head” competitor.

The number of destination they cover is very similar and their prices are extremely competitive.

So, what’s the big differences?

Airalo’s app is more user-friendly with a cleaner interface (it’s the best on the market). They also offer a loyalty program called “Airmoney” where you earn points with each purchase.

Customer support (although not amazing), is available through the Airalo app.

Where Ubigi shines is reliability. The truth is that the speed test performance of Airalo can be lacking in some destinations. Ubigi also offers a larger range of plans options for different needs.

That’s a big plus.

The truth is that one isn’t necessarily better than the other.

But I’ve started favouring Ubigi a lot more since using them over the last couple of months due to their reliability.

Nomad vs Ubigi

Nomad was one of the first eSIM companies I ever used.

And to tell you the truth, they are very good.

Nomad has a great phone app and covers more than 200+ destinations worldwide. They even offer a free trial (500MB) for 47 destinations.

Cool, right?

I’ve found Nomad’s plans to be slightly more expensive than Ubigi’s in most regions. Ubigi also typically offers a larger range.

Performance and data speeds are comparable between the two providers, though Ubigi seems to have better coverage in rural areas of Europe.

Nomad’s customer support is good, with quickish (about 10 minutes) response times through their in-app chat.

Yesim vs Ubigi

Yesim is a newer player in the eSIM market but offers some unique features.

Yesim is the only other competitor to allow you to install one eSIM and just buy whatever plan you need. No hassle of constantly installing new eSIMs.

Where are the big differences?

I feel like Yesim is more convenient. They also offer more unlimited plans than Ubigi and they have a 5% cash back program where you earn “Ycoins” on every purchase.

It’s almost like a 5% discount on every plan.

In my tests, Ubigi provided faster and more reliable speed results. They are also more affordable in most cases than Yesim.

Customer service is another area where these providers differ significantly. Ubigi has faster response times, while Yesim can take a while to reply.

Who Ubigi eSIM Is Perfect For—And Who Should Skip It

The truth is that Ubigi isn’t going to suit everyone (although it gets pretty close) and that’s okay.

After testing Ubigi and using it for a couple of months, here’s who I would and wouldn’t recommend it to.
